BBC Food Programme episode

Activity: Contribution to Event/Engagement › Public outreach

Description

Amy McLennan featured on BBC's The Food Programme Dr Amy McLennan, a School of Anthropology Research Affiliate, recently featured on The Food Programme on BBC Radio 4. She collaborated with Producer Carys Wall to explore how the tiny island nation of Nauru might help us to think differently about population-level obesity. Health trends in the Pacific islands precede a growing global burden of obesity and the diseases related to it. We have sought to address this trend in Australia and across the Pacific for over 50 years, with limited success. Amy reflects on her research on Nauru to date, and suggests one thing we haven't yet tried is to question prevailing cultural assumptions about the causes of obesity - could re-thinking the diet-and-exercise dogma help us find new ways forward?
