Contribution to research study: "The rising cost of Long COVID and ME/CFS in Germany" (Event)

Activity: Academic Engagements & Memberships › External research and teaching engagement

Description

I was a key member of the top-class research team behind this study about the burden of Long COVID and ME/CFS in Germany, alongside James Daniell, Johannes Brand, Joerg Heydecke, Dirk Paessler and Simon Schoening. This was a unique collaboration between Risklayer GmbH and the ME/CFS Research Foundation, encompassing patient and policy perspectives, two General Sir John Monash Foundation Scholars, and with expertise from the The Australian National University, University of Adelaide and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. In addition to our findings about the cost of Long COVID and ME/CFS to Germany (over 60 billion Euros per year), we developed a new method for making sense of complex and dynamic population health conditions about which data are patchy or scarce. Chronic health is, we found, well-suited to the methods used in disaster and risk modelling, and the research process yielded unexpected insights. Overall, reducing the burden of these hidden conditions and improving outcomes for people with Long COVID and/or ME/CFS, and their families and communities, will benefit all of us.
