Creativity, Cybernetics and Computers: insights from 1968 to 2050

Activity: Contribution to Event/Engagement › Public event

Description

Presentation at SXSW Sydney, to a sold-out audience. Described as 'brilliant' on LinkedIn, and highlighted in the daily round-up. Imagine a time before computer screens, printers or PowerPoint presentations. Before computer graphics and digital music. Before artists were using computers. Early encounters between artists and computers were vibrant, experimental, sometimes noisy, explosions of creativity. They sparked new collaborations, created new infrastructures, and imagined new, hopeful futures. In doing so, they laid the foundations for many of the technologies we take for granted today at SXSW 2024. They created our future, just as we today are looking towards 2050. In this session, we will explore the prehistories of today’s creative technologies and tomorrow’s possibilities. Supported by a retro slide projector, we will share the stories of artists, engineers, programmers, musicians, and tinkerers from the 1960s through to present-day. We’ll discuss how they collectively created the futures of today, and explore what we can learn from them as we shape what is possible tomorrow.
