I was invited by the Government of South Australia (Heritage) and The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre to lead a team to carry out two research reports on the regions of Burra and Moonta and advise the Australian Government Heritage Council on the nomination to elevate these regions to the National Heritage List. The Burra and Moonta mines are the most prominent examples of how the migrant Cornish diaspora of the 1860s imported technology such as steam engines, engine houses and all the infrastructure, and also their distinctive Cornish culture to Australia to create Australia’s industrial revolution. The reports’ recommendations supported the nominations and both sites were added to the National Heritage Register by the Minister in 2017 as sites 104 and 105.
