This keynote address to a conference of art academics from across Asia and the Pacific focused on the importance of foregrounding close observation and thick description of the object in interpretation, as a methodology for inviting individuals to bring their own cultural, historical and linguistic contexts to the interpretive process.

Event titleThe APAF Inaugural Symposium 2025 invites educators, students, and arts professionals from across the Asia Pacific to engage in critical dialogue on the evolving intersections of art education, practice, and professional ecosystems. Organized into two core panel streams—*Pedagogy in Practice and Entangled Art Ecosystems*—the symposium will explore themes such as sustainable material innovation, curriculum development, curatorial practice, conservation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
