Addressing the conference theme – “Go your own way? Social Policy in an era of fracturing solidarities” – this special plenary session brings together an international panel of speakers to discuss the question “Can Progressive Social Policies Flourish in an Era of Fracturing Solidarities?”. Across the globe, social policy is operating within fraught and increasingly conflictual economic, social, political and environmental contexts, marked by eroding solidarities. Moreover, trends towards heightened polarisation and division within nation-states and communities risk undermining collectivism. This is an increasingly challenging environment for progressive social policies and those that champion them. Our panel of speakers will draw on their expertise about different countries around the world to reflect on the implications of the current context for the future of progressive social policies.
