“Weaving Voices” — multimedia installation for the exhibition “Australian Cybernetic: a point through time”

Activity: Contribution to Event/Engagement › Performance/exhibition

Description

A single-channel multimedia work assembled for the School of Cybernetics’ exhibition, which ran in the Birch Building from 22 November to 7 December 2022. The piece is edited from the “three questions” weekly reflection videos recorded by the 3A Institute’s 2019 cohort. Its soundtrack is not a single composition but a constructed bed, mixing sampled recordings of the students themselves with other digital audio samples, among them Paul’s audio work “Music for an Eagle and Three Satellites”, which exists both as a composition and as a version driven by a 2000–2001 dataset. Paul carried out the final video and audio mixdown. He was the sole maker of the work; Matthew Holt’s contribution was conceptual, and no part of the making was executed by anyone else. The exhibition was conceived as a twenty-first-century successor to Cybernetic Serendipity (Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 1968) and to Computers and Electronics in the Arts at the Australia 75 Festival of Creative Arts and Sciences (Canberra, 1975).
