Historian of modern Islamic thought and Middle East Studies, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Islamic Studies and Politics of Religion. Interested in the Late Ottoman period, Muslim modernism, the invention of Salafism, Islamic movements, the early Islamic period, Arabic media and popular culture, and contemporary Middle East geopolitics. Teaching Arabic language. Reader of Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Turkish, Persian. Studied at SOAS and the University of Oxford. Lecturer in Late Ottoman and modern Turkish political and literary texts at Oxford before current post.
