Personal profile

Biography

I am the Research Development Strategist at the Research School of Biology.  I support a researchers across the divisions of ecology and evolution, plant sciences, and biomedical sciences and biochemistry.

I came to research strategy and development after more than a decade as a chemical and synthetic biologist in research groups in the US, UK, and Australia.  My previous experiences include teaching, researcher development and mentoring, national and international grant and fellowship development, and evidence-based science policy.

Despite occasionally missing the research bench and my pipets, I enjoy my research strategy role as it incorporates bits of art and policy with my love science.  I am intellectually challenged regularly and constantly learning in my role.  I find it immensely rewarding to work with multi-disciplinary teams of researchers and other staff develop and implement major research initiatives hosted at the Research School of Biology and extending across the ANU campus and with global colleagues in private and public sectors.

My research strategy activities include:

  • Capacity building activities that enhance individual and teams of researchers to co-desing more competitive research proposals, including grants, fellowships, tenders, and/or contracts.
  • Strategic development and review of business cases, impact pathways, and proposals
  • Defensible budgeting development that aligns to research needs, institutional principles and funder priorities.
  • Provide strategic support and coordination for multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional, and other large scale team projects.
  • Coordination and evidence-based guidance to executive leadership.

As part of my executive role at the Early and Midcareer Research (EMCR) Forum, hosted by the Australian Academy of Science, I lead for the International Portfolio.
