Biography

Professor Desmond Yip is a Senior Staff Specialist in Medical Oncology at The Canberra Hospital and Professor at the ANU School of Medicine & Psychology. He is a full time practicing medical oncologist and was Clinical Director from 2010 to 2023. His main clinical and research interests are in the area of gastrointestinal oncology and developmental therapeutics of cancer drugs. He also has a subspecialty interests in gastrointestinal stromal tumours and pancreatic cancers. He is presently a member of the Cancer Institute NSW eviQ Medical Oncology Reference Committee, and Treasurer of the Private Cancer Physicians of Australia. He an active member of the Australasian Gastrointestinal Trials Group and has served as Chair of the Grants Committee, member of study management committees and Study Chair of an international multicentre randomised collaborative trial in metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumour. He has been involved in the publication of over 170 journal articles and 11 book chapters. He has been involved in authoring three iterations of a Cochrane Collaboration Systematic Review in pancreatic cancer and was also on the working party to update the Cancer Council Australia Clinical Guidelines on colorectal cancer. Professor Yip has worked in collaboration with the John James Foundation, Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)/ Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Pacific Islands Program and Doctors Assisting in South-Pacific Islands (DAISI) to help develop cancer services in the Solomon Islands through in-country multidisciplinary missions, mentoring, supply of equipment and facilitating staff training visits to Canberra. This has led to the commissioning of the nation's first cancer unit and training of the first oncologist. He is presently involved in cancer service development projects in Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Vanuatu.  He is the current Chair of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia Global Oncology Group and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Asia Pacific Regional Council.
