Biography

Ellen is a Senior Fellow with Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell's [3A Institute](https://3ainstitute.cecs.anu.edu.au/). 

Ellen is not sure how to describe her expertise anymore, having worked in roles spanning engineering, database design, data publication and maintenance, policy and law. Prior to joining 3AI, Ellen was technical lead for the Consumer Data Standards program within CSIRO's Data61, designing APIs and validation tools to support consumers sharing data safely with organisations of their choosing. She has also held roles including Head of Policy for the Open Data Institute (ODI), headquartered in London; ministerial adviser on data to senior UK cabinet minister Elisabeth Truss; and Manager of Digital Policy and Projects for the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, headquartered in the Netherlands. 

Ellen is a member of the Australian government's Data Advisory Council and author of Made by Humans: the AI Condition (Melbourne University Publishing, 2018). She has written about data for publications including The Guardian, New Scientist and Griffith Review. A board game about data she created with Jeni Tennison, CEO of the Open Data Institute, is being played in 19 countries.
