Biography

I research ancient Chinese philosophical and historical texts. I think it is important to attend to the detail of these texts, but equally important to remain attentive to the big-picture reasons that these texts are still worth reading. I tend to pursue such questions as, "How and why do we seek to know about the past?" and "How do we negotiate the conflicts that arise from our inquiry?" I was trained as a sinologist but have since branched out into comparative philosophy as well. Before coming to the Australian National University, I also taught at the University of Illinois-Chicago (2007-2012) and at the University of Sydney (2013-2020).
