Biography
Dr Eve Warburton is a research fellow at the Department of Political and Social Change in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. She is also Director of ANU's Indonesia Institute at the College of Asia and the Pacific. Her research is concerned broadly with problems of representation and governance in young and developing democracies, with a focus on Southeast Asia and Indonesia in particular.
Dr Warburton is the PI for a research project Private Power and Public Office, which examines the rise of business politicians in Indonesia and the implications of this trend for democracy and good governance. The project is supported by her Futures Grant ($200,000), a fellowship awarded by the ANU to outstanding early career researchers.
She is also co-PI on an ARC Discovery Project Political Reperesentation in Indonesia (A$683,912) with Prof Edward Apsinall, Dr Sally White, Prof Burhanuddin Muhtadi and AsProf Diego Fossati. The project examines the quality of democratic representation using surveys of both voters and elected legislators.
Dr Warburton has published in leading disciplinary and area studies journals on topics of democratic representation, state-business relations, and the political economy of policymaking in Indonesia. Her first book manuscript, Resource Nationalism in Indonesia: Booms, Big Business and the State, was published with Cornell University Press in 2023.
