Biography

Iain D. Henry is a Senior Lecturer in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University.  He completed a PhD and MA at the Australian National University, and a BA at the University of New South Wales. In 2014 he was a visiting Fulbright Scholar at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

A graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy, he has previously worked for the Australian Army, the Australian Public Service, and Qantas Airways.

Research interests

Iain's research interests include alliance politics, the domino theory, Asian security, the Cold War in Asia, diplomatic history and Australian strategic policy.

He has published articles in International Security, Contemporary Politics, the Australian Journal of International Affairs and Security Challenges.  His first book, Reliability and Alliance Interdependence: The United States and Its Allies in Asia, 1949-1969, was published in the Cornell Studies in Security Affairs series in 2022.

He welcomes applications from prospective Honours, Masters (Advanced) and PhD students interested in topics related to his research interests.  Students should contact him no later than June for guidance on research projects starting in Semester 1 of the following year.
