Biography

Kim Huynh is an academic and broadcaster who helps people tell their stories.

He is currently working on a book about the politics, ethics and experience of caring. Kim was commissioned to write A Statement from Australia’s Carers which sits atop the National Carers Strategy (2024-2034). He advises the Federal Government on the Strategy’s implementation.

Kim’s politics and philosophy courses earned him the ANU Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has supervised students on a variety of topics across the social sciences and humanities.  

His book on Australia's Refugee Politics in the 21st Century (Routledge) develops ways to enhance national security, refugee rights and social cohesion. Kim’s published a collection of stories about contemporary Vietnam entitled Vietnam as if ... (ANU Press). He co-authored Children and Global Conflict (Cambridge University Press) and co-edited The Culture Wars (Palgrave-McMillan). His biography of his parents Where the Sea Takes Us (HarperCollins) attracted academic and literary acclaim.

Kim contributes to public life as an ambassador for the Early Morning Centre where he coordinates a current affairs discussion group. He hosts ABC Radio Canberra’s Sunday Brunch which showcases the capital region's cultural and intellectual life. Kim produced a documentary for ABC Radio National with runner, poet and rough sleeper Martin Steer entitled, “The Other Martin”. He ran as independent candidate in the 2022 federal election and 2016 ACT election.
