Prof Lawrence Cram

Professor Lawrence Cram is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Applied Mathematics in the Research School of Physics and Engineering at the Australian National University. He retired in December, 2013, from the position of Master, University House and Graduate House.  His career spans research and teaching in engineering, mathematics, astronomy, physics and computing.  Professor Cram was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at ANU from 2004 to 2012. Prior to taking up this position, he was Professor of Physics (Astrophysics) at the University of Sydney.  He was appointed to this Chair in 1987 from the position of assistant Chief of the CSIRO Division of Applied Physics.  He has worked as an astronomer in the USA, Germany and France. 

Professor Cram has extensive experience in public sector research management and public policy. He worked for three years as Executive Director in the Australian Research Council and has been involved in the successful commercialization of research at CSIRO, the University of Sydney and the ANU. 

Professor Cram has long been interested in higher education, particularly in relation to the identification and enhancement of the affordances that arise between universities and their scholarly communities.

He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, the Australian Institute of Physics, and the Royal Astronomical Society.

Professor Cram was employed as Deputy or Pro Vice-Chancellor at Charles Darwin University 2014-2019.
