My research focuses on global governance and critical human security, transnational environmental crime, regionalism and regional environmental governance in Southeast Asia, justice and transition pathways to low carbon economies, environmental security, climate security and human security (with a particular focus on the Asia Pacific), including food security and climate migration. I also have research interests in the UN system, and in global ethics, particularly global environmental ethics inspired by a cosmopolitan approach. I have taught graduate courses in global governance, non-traditional security and human security, IR theory, and research methods and approaches in IR. From 2018-2020 I chaired the International Board of the Academic Council on the UN System (acuns.org). I am Lead Faculty with the Earth System Governance research network (http://www.earthsystemgovernance.org/) and, from 2019-2021, was a member of the ESG international Scientific Steering Committee. I am a member of the international Advisory Committee for the intergovernmental Platform on Disaster Displacement (http://disasterdisplacement.org/) and a member of the Network of Experts for the Geneva-based Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.  I have contributed to international public policy debates in my field as an expert reviewer for (among others) the United Nations Environment Programme's Global Environmental Outlook, the IPCC's Working Group III, and as an invited expert for ASEAN (Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice), the UK-Singapore CoP-26 Universities Network, and the Draft Pacific Regional Framework on Climate Mobility.  

Past international contributions include membership of the advisory committee for the Varieties of Peace research program at the University of Umea in Sweden, Vice Chair for the Asia Pacific region of the International Studies Association (ISA), and adjunct faculty in the Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security and Global Governance at the McCormack Graduate School at U. Mass Boston (http://www.umb.edu/academics/mgs/crhsgg). Over the duration of my academic career, I have held appointment as visiting professor and visiting fellow at the University of Nottingham (as a Highfield Fellow), Balliol College Oxford, the LSE, the Free University of Amsterdam, Keele University and Sheffield University. I also spent two years at the University of Warwick as Reader in International Relations and Director of Studies for the MA (International Relations) programme.

I have contributed to university governance in a number of roles, including as Associate Dean for Higher Degree Research in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, a member of the CAP College Executive, and an elected member of the ANU Academic Board.

My research has been funded by the Australian Research Council, the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, the Japan Foundation, the Australian Academy of Social Sciences and The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the US Institute of Peace, and the Macarthur Foundation.
