Biography
Mathew Trinca AM FAHA is Professor of Museum Practice, a Commissioner for Culture and Olympic Heritage for the International Olympic Committee, and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. He is also the Chair of Blue Shield Australia, which is devoted to heritage preservation, and sits on several arts and cultural sector boards and advisory bodies. In 2020, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to museums.
He was formerly Director of the National Museum of Australia between 2014 to 2024, and worked in senior roles in the museum from 2003. Before that, he was the manager of the MuseumLink program at the Western Australian Museum, and worked as a history and heritage consultant. As Director of the NMA, he was responsible for doubling its visitor numbers and developing its galleries and exhibitions, with a strong emphasis on touring programs across Australia and around the world.
Research Interests
Mathew has co-edited two collections of essays, Country: Visions of Land and People in Western Australia and Under Suspicion: Citizenship and Internment in Australia during the Second World War and published on Australian History and Museum Studies in a range of scholarly and popular journals. He has research interests in museology, museum leadership and practice and the cultural history of Australia.
