Personal profile

Biography

I received a BA and an M. Sc. in Anthropology from Université de Montréal and a PhD in Archaeology at the Australian National University.

I am an ARC DECRA Fellow with affiliations to the School of Archaeology & Anthropology (ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences) and the School of Culture, History and Language (ANU College of Asia and the Pacific). I founded the Interdisciplinary Pottery Research Group (IPORG), Australia’s premier research collective focused on pottery studies. I am also an Associate Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF).

My work in archaeological science has contributed to advance our understanding of the initial human colonisation of the Pacific Ocean. My research blends innovative analytical techniques with contemporary theoretical frameworks, shedding new light on Asia-Pacific populations’ past.

I participated in archaeological excavations and/or have worked on archaeological collections from a wide range of sites in Canada, United States, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Australia, Tonga, and New Caledonia.

Research interests

My DECRA project consists of using preserved residues in archaeological pottery from Vanuatu (3,000 year sequence) to document how pottery use and diet changed through time. I am working in collaboration with the communities of potters from the west coast of Espiritu Santo to document oral histories and traditional knowledge about pottery use. This information will guide the interpretations on the role of food items and pottery in the past.

I also use my expertise in petrographic microscopy to understand manufacturing processes and usage patterns for pottery and other artefacts.
