Biography

Dr. Nawaz is a visiting fellow at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University (ANU), and a senior lecturer in geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS). An interdisciplinary environmental geographer with over two decades of research, academic leadership, and international collaboration across Australia and Asia, his research integrates GeoAI, spatial data science, Earth observation, GIS, remote sensing, and machine learning to address environmental challenges, including drought, hydroclimatic variability, erosion, sediment dynamics, geomorphology, vegetation change, and flood risk. He has authored more than 120 scholarly publications and contributed to internationally funded research collaborations across Australia and Asia. At ANU, his current research focuses on GeoAI and geospatial approaches to environmental change, particularly the relationships between topography, landscape processes, and denudation, while strengthening research collaboration across Australia and Asia. His broader work aims to harness geospatial science, artificial intelligence, and Earth observation to develop innovative, predictive, and decision-oriented approaches to environmental sustainability.
