Since graduating with a PhD in Biochemistry (University of Queensland, 1986) my research career trajectory spans organic synthesis and protein chemistry (metalloenzymes and inhibitors) to current research on mechanisms of human disease involving haematological systems, in particular related to bleeding and thrombotic risk, focused on molecular and cellular regulation of platelet receptor expression and metalloproteinase-mediated shedding, with broader implications and significance beyond haemostasis, thrombosis and coagulation, to myeloproliferative disorders, inflammatory disease and immune and non-immune thrombocytopenia. This research has resulted in >220 publications cited >16,000 times (h-Index 75) including >20 research papers and >12 Invited Reviews or Commentaries in Blood, the highly rated international journal in clinical and experimental haematology (Impact Factor = 20.3). Significant publications from national and international collaborations involve structural biology, small molecule inhibitors, experimental models of human disease, clinical analysis of platelet function in stroke, coronary disease, (macro)thrombocytopenia, and heart failure and circulatory support devices, as well as microfluidics computational analysis of shear effects on thrombus growth and stability. I have served institutional roles on Faculty Board and Research Committee (2008-2014), and serving on Policy/Research/Funding Committees, including the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) as Discipline Panel Chair (2004, 2006), on the Assigners Academy (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018) and Ideas Grant Panel (2019), and as a Member of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) of the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood since 2008-. Contributions to the wider Discipline include international Editorial roles (Section Editor, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2009-2018), national and international Conference Organizing Committees (including ISTH-2005 and ISTH-2019), and an inaugural member of the international Steering Committee of the Asian-Pacific Microangiopathic Thrombocytopenia (APMAT) Network 2011-2020. In 2014-2016, I was elected President of the Australian Vascular Biology Society (AVBS). In 2019, I was appointed Associate Editor of the major international journal, Blood (Impact Factor = 20.3), and was appointed an Honorary life member of the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia and New Zealand (THANZ) in 2021, presented the Professor Barry Firkin Oration at the THANZ Blood2022 conference in Sydney in 2022, and received the Esteemed Career Award from the International Society on Thrombosis & Haemostasis (ISTH) in 2023.
