Biography
Royston Gustavson joined ANU in 2003. A passionate educator, in 2009 he received the ANU Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, from 2010-2011 was Associate Dean (Education) of the ANU College of Business and Economics, and from 2010-2012 served on ANU’s 15-person governing body, the ANU Council. Since January 2012 he has been Associate Dean (Education) in the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences, with academic oversight of the College’s degree programs and courses, concurrently serving from 2017 as Deputy Dean of the College. From January 2019 to April 2021 he was Interim Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) and, following an executive restructure, was appointed the university's inaugural Dean (Academic Quality) from 6 April 2021.
His service to government includes appointment since 2015 by the Minister to the board of a statutory authority, the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies; he was founding co-chair of the Board's Innovation Committee and is currently Chair of its Curriculum Advisory Committee. He is a former member of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency’s Register of Experts.
From 2015 to 2017 he convened the learning and teaching network of the Australasian Council of Deans of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
He is currently Profssor in the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods (CSRM), having been appointed to its predecessor, the Australian Centre for Applied Social Research Methods (AusCen) in April 2015.
Royston is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK); and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Institute of Managers and Leaders Australia and New Zealand, and Bruce Hall at ANU.
