Ryan Edwards is an Associate Professor of Economics and the Deputy Director of the ANU Development Policy Centre. He was the centre's lead on the Australian Government's Pacific Reseach Program for its entire seven years, and was the thematic research lead across the consortium on labour mobility, migration, integration, and economic development. His research lies at the intersection of labour economics, international trade, and the environment, and he mostly does applied empirical work in Indonesia, Australia and the Pacific region. His research is published in top field journals in economics and development, he is regularly engaged as an expert advisor to governments and international organisations and sought by the media for commentary and analysis, and he sits on a variety of government advisory boards and committees.

Ryan's current ANU appointment is a Level D CCF to June 2026, and by courtesy, he is also associated with the Indonesia Project, the Migration Hub and the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics at the ANU, where he has convened the two key graduate research courses in economics, supervises masters and PhD students, and co-convenes the ACDE Seminars. He is also an associate editor of Asia and the Pacific Policy Studies and Asia-Pacific Economic Literature, the editor of the Development Policy Centre Discussion Papers, and a co-convenor of the biennial Pacific Update in Suva, Fiji. Beyond the ANU, he is associated and works closely with the Poverty Action Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Innovations for Poverty Action on policy and program evaluations using randomised field experiments.

Ryan returned to the ANU in 2019 from academic appointments in the Department of Economics at Dartmouth College, where he taught development economics and statistics, and in the Department of Earth System Science, Centre for Food Security and the Environment, and Freeman Spogli Institute at Stanford University, where he managed a large research program around palm oil, poverty, and sustainability. Before and during his PhD study at the ANU he worked in the Australian Government—mostly on budgets, school funding, and impact evaluation policy in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet—development, finance, and various other odd jobs.
