Biography
Sally White is a Research Fellow in the Department of Political and Social Change in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. Previously Sally was Academic Manager of the Partnerships in Islamic Education Scholarships (PIES) program. From 2018 to 2021 she was a research lead in the Australian Department of Foreign and Trade (DFAT) project Supporting the Rules-Based Order in Southeast Asia, focusing on Women's Political Leadership in Indonesia. She was co-lead, with Dr Greg Fealy, on research focused on Islamic polarisation in Indonesia. Sally is currently engaged in an Australian Research Council (ARC) research project lead by Professor Edward Aspinall and Dr Eve Warburton on Representation in Indonesia.
Research interests
Sally’s research interests focus on Islam, gender and politics in Indonesia. She has been involved in a number of projects studying different aspects of Islam in Indonesia, including a sourcebook of readings on Islam in Southeast Asia and an ARC-funded project on terrorism in Indonesia in which her role was to research the involvement of women in jihadist networks. Her current research interests include women's political participation, understandings of representation, and the dynamics of Islamic mass organisations in Indonesia.
