Biography
Sumonkanti Das completed his PhD in statistics from the University of Wollongong. He did his PhD in the area of small area estimation (SAE) focusing on robust inference in poverty mapping. After his PhD, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. He contributed to several joint research projects of Maastricht University and the Statistics Netherlands (CBS), where he extensively worked on multilevel time series modelling to estimate mobility trends for small domains of the Dutch population. Since 2021, he has been working as a Research Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU). In the School of Demography, he worked for estimating smoking prevalence at disaggregated domains in Australia under an National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Idea Grant project. Now he is working on an Australina Resaerch Council (ARC) Linkage Project "Surveillance and sampling to maintain absence of pests and diseases" in the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics. In addition to the research position, he is involved with ANU Statistical Support Network as a Course Coordinator. Before joining ANU, he was affiliated as a faculty member of the Department of Statistics, at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Bangladesh. Mr. Das has an immense interest in implementing small area estimation methodology in population health, nutrition, demography, and poverty. He has expertise in multilevel modelling of complex survey data.
