Biography

Toni is emeritus professor at the ANU POLIS: Centre for Social Policy Research. She was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2021 for her services to education (she was Foundation Dean of the ANU College and Social Sciences for 7 years) and to public service (she was Director of the Australian Institute of Criminology for 5 years). She is a long term board director of the Ted Noffs Foundation which provides both residential treatment and day centres for young people with drug issues. She is a member of the University of Konstanz Excellence Strategy expert advisory board, Australia representative to WAPOR Asia, Academic Board of the Australia Institute of Future Education, ACT Reducing Recidivism Advisory Committee, and advisor to Pill Testing Australia. She recently concluded her 7 year term as the inaugural chair of the Griffith Institute of Criminology’s Industry and International Advisory Board and foundation Board director of the Survey Research Centre Pty Ltd for 5 years.

She has held ARC, NH&MRC, and NDLERF grants and numerous consultancies during her career.

Career highlights:

Establishing the first national monitoring program on drug use and crime in Australia (DUMA) in 1999; Membership of the Australian National Council on Drugs (2006-2011); chair of the Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards (2003-2007); member of the Australian Government Delegation to UN Crime Commission meetings (2004-2007); first female director of the Australian Institute of Criminology (2003-2008); Purchase of the Survey Research Centre Pty Ltd by ANU Enterprise and establishment of the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods Centre in 2015 to facilitate high quality impactful social policy research at ANU.
