Personal profile

Biography

I am a mother of three, a social historian of modern China, and a postdoctoral fellow at the Australian Centre on China in the World. I earned my PhD from the University of British Columbia, specializing in the history of the People’s Republic of China. My work focuses on religion and politics, oral history and memory studies, and the history of state violence. My book manuscript, mainly funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, examines the causes and legacies of the conflicts between the CCP authorities and southern Yunnan Muslims from the early 1950s to the present day. I investigate seventy years of troubled relations between the Party-state and the southern Yunnan Muslim community by analyzing how Islam and Maoism have influenced their interactions, shaping the development of regional conflicts. My research articles have recently appeared in Modern China and the Journal of Chinese History
