Project Details
Description
The prime objective of this project is a comprehensive analysis of the making of the Jamaican landscape, within the context of comparative colonialism and creolization. Jamaica offers a vital example of the role of sugar and slavery in the shaping of tropical colonial landscapes, and of the transformations following abolition and independence. A series of theories of landscape evaluation will be tested. As well as a substantial monograph, the project will generate publications reporting special studies of particular landscape features, using interdisciplinary methods drawn from history, geography, psychology, art history and ecology.
