    Investigating a formative period in the history of Indigenous-settler relations in Australia and New Zealand, this comparative study will examine the careers of the first Protectors of Aborigines, who sought a more humane colonial society, but pioneered a system of state control over Indigenous peoples with profound long-term negative consequences.
