Project Details
Description
Crossing the disciplines of theatre history, literary and cultural studies, this project is a study of the theatre in late eighteenth-early nineteenth century Britain as a site of sociability. It will focus on audience behaviour within and without the auditorium, exploring how why and where people met and interacted in the theatre, and the representation of this sociability in contemporary literature, visual art and print culture. The sociability of the theatre will be contextualised in relation to social, political and cultural networks beyond the theatre walls, with the aim of reconfiguring our knowledge of theatre, public culture and sociability in the Romantic period.
