Project Details
Description
The project examines factors influencing leaf shaped variation in the morphologically diverse genus Pelargonium. Leaf shape plays a pivotal role affecting plants' photosynthetic capabilities - its ability to survive and reproduce. The project will examine morphological and physiological variation associated with differences in leaf shape in response to water availability and the consequences thereof using 14 Pelargonium species selecting in a phylogenetically structured design. Results will improve understanding of why leaf shape varies and the impact of this variation on performance, and will allow examination of central questions of origin and maintenance of phenotypic variation in most fundamental plant trait.
