A Unified Theory of 'If's

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

If's are among the most important but least understood aspects of our language and thinking. Rational plans, decisions, public policies, legal judgments, and medical interventions all require hypothetical reasoning involving ifs, as does our theorising about the natural world, social practices, and our history. Yet we lack a comprehensive, unified, readily actionable theory of ifs. This project will provide such a theory, based on probability. It will combine and develop approaches from philosophy and linguistics, influencing both these fields, while also informing research in computer science and psychology. It will foster interdisciplinary and international dialogue via workshops, public lectures, and collaboration with a Research Fellow. It will deliver the tools to understand ifs in their myriad applications. It will focus especially on enhancing the practical implementation of ifs in artificial intelligence and machine learning, with
