Project Details
Description
The goal of this project is to compile a corpus of accented Australian English, to be used as a basisfor acoustic modelling. This corpus will contribute to our understanding of the full range ofdifferent varieties of English spoken in multicultural Australia, where over 20% of the populationreport to use another language at home, and some 300 different languages are spoken (ABS 2016).The linguistic questions that can be asked of this corpus relate to the factors that impact the degreeto which migrant second-language speakers adapt to the speech patterns around them, including thesocial meanings of those patterns. As Australia becomes increasingly multicultural andmultilingual, this research thus provides a linguistic perspective on ways in which migrant groupsintegrate into a new society, and pick up on, and adopt, the norms of that society.
