ACIGA/LIGO Collaboration on Gravitational Wave Detection Centre

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Gravitational waves are emitted by the most violent events in the universe. Their detection requires giant laster interferometers with a resolution equivalent to a hairs width in the distance to alpha centaure. Such sensitivity is obtained by combining leading edge optical and instrumentation technology with sophisticated data analysis techniques. In collaboration with the US LIGO Project, we will develop and refine such technology to ensure the birth of gravitational astronomy with the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. This will set the basis for Australian partnership in the multi million dollar US Facility.
