Project Details
Description
We will demonstrate functional photonic elements based on robust micro-defects in liquid crystals acting as artificial pixels. These elements can be created, erased, and tuned at will using laser beams and immersed micro-particles. The flexible pixels allow for efficient manipulation of optical signals, with the ability to switch between multiple distinct states. The unprecedented optical control over multistable ordered structures will offer a wide range of applications in photonics, such as optical data storage, tunable photonic crystals, and light controlled displays. This collaborative project will bring to Australia world class expertise and it will strengthen the international standing of Australia in the field of photonics.
