Description
We aim to synthesise experimentally and characterise the pressure-temperature dependence of the substitution of certain trace elements in common minerals. This is a new approach to trace element relations in the crust and mantle, and also of estimating temperatures within the Earth. Trace element analyses from small regions of samples will allow temperature and pressure determination to higher limiting temperatures than older methods, from small mineral grains or zones within larger grains. Geochronology of the same materials by SHRIMP microprobe will allow calculation of absolute rates of pressure and temperature change and growth rates. This will have wide application, including diamond exploration and crustal evolution.
