    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

By demonstrating Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen 'entanglement' and violations of Bell's inequalities with ensembles of ultracold atoms, we will test one of the fundamental premises of quantum mechanics - quantum nonlocality - in previously unattainable regimes. Deterministic generation of large-scale entanglement with massive particles will be a significant step toward understanding the properties of mesoscopic and macroscopic superpositions of massive particles, since they introduce couplings to gravitational fields, not previously tested in quantum optics experiments. There are practical applications as well, such as in precision measurement and the design of improved atom interferometers for remote gravitational sensing and navigation.
