Project Details

Description

ANZIC will work with AuScope and other NCRIS projects to facilitate Australian participation in international scientific drilling consortia. Extensive scientific drilling by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), for the past 56 years and 27 years, respectively, has generated public-domain knowledge of Earths history and dynamics on a scale unmatched by other science programs. These long-running and highly coordinated international collaborations provide billion-dollar scientific drilling infrastructure to acquire samples of sediment, rock, fluids and living organisms from under the Earth's surface and below the seafloor. Analysis of these samples delivers critical insight into past and future climate change, natural hazards, resources and ecosystem diversity through research into the processes that shape Earths lithosphere, biosphere, cryosphere and atmosphere.
