Description
Australia's seafloor marine jurisdiction is nearly double our land territory but remains largely under-explored. The marine environment has deep cultural, societal, and recreational significance to Australians. It also provides environmental and societal protection, and economic resources from tourism and fisheries through to mineral, energy and other geological resources. Australias blue economy contributes AU$68.1B annually and employs 393,000 people, and is forecast to grow to AU$100B/yr by 2025, even without considering emerging industries such as desalination, carbon capture, bioprospecting, seabed mining, and tidal power. The marine environment is a source of hazards including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and long-term impacts including sea-level rise and ecosystem collapse. The challenge for Australia lays in understanding our marine jurisdiction to sustain and service diverse interests, while maintaining sufficient protection of the oceans a
