Project Details
Description
The equipment requested in this proposal is a Class IV laser with associated componentry, to be used to
step-heat and fuse samples and standards in the new RSES Argon Facility. This is the last item of major
equipment needed to complete the facility. The new facility needs a Photon Machines CO2 laser because,
whereas the new Argus VI mass spectrometer is capable of 0.024% age precision, the accuracy of these measurements critically depends on the precision with which standards can be measured. Using the Photon CO2 laser will ensure: i) uniform heating to minimize thermal gradients; ii) efficient and effective coupling between laser light and the crystal structure so to be sure that complete fusion eventually results.
