Project Details

Description

An array of 24 seismic stations will be deployed around Bass Strait in order to construct detailed images of the crust that links Tasmania to mainland Australia. The analysis will utilize recent state of the art developments in ambient noise surface wave tomography and receiver function inversion. The goal of this novel experiment is to (1) address outstanding questions regarding Tasmania's tectonic provenance and relationship with mainland Australia, and (2) illuminate upper crustal features beneath Bass Strait, and hence better understand the broad-scale architecture of a region that contains significant hydrocarbon reserves.
