Description
Social psychological methods rarely achieve long-term change in attitudes and behaviours, but the conceptual resources now exist to do so. The proposed research builds on very encouraging results to explore the role of group-based interaction in sustaining long-term change. Where people who are nominally committed to a cause are brought together to agree on ways to advance that cause there is evidence that this can create intensified commitment. The proposed research involves a series of experiments intended to test competing explanations of the effects, and refines the method for application to long-term interventions designed to bolster commitment to combat racism, and to support programs for international development and sustainability.
