Project Details
Description
We will unite leading Australian clinical researchers in malaria with experts in mapping and modelling, in response to three challenges: surveillance; diagnostics; and treatment.1. Surveillance: We will track drug resistance and parasite movements using genomics and population genetics; human traits that carry risk of drug failure or toxicity; and develop antibody biomarkers of malaria exposure for surveillance. With these data we will develop tools to map changing patterns of malaria and define populations that require targeted interventions.2. Diagnostics: We will evaluate more sensitive malaria tests needed for surveillance and community treatment, and develop novel tests suitable for elimination campaigns.3. Treatment: Our drug trials will span first-in-man trials through to phase 3 trials, with policy relevant outcomes. Mathematical modelling of distribution and breakdown of drugs will accelerate drug development through this pipeline.
