Project Details
Description
The conversion of farmland for development is affecting tens of millions of villagers, and influencing the current and future shape of political and social organisation in China. In the Pearl River and Yangtze River deltas, radically different local policies and practices result in either villagers' dispossession and relocation, or their continued ownership of developed land. Using on-site interviews and a survey, this project will examine how different modes of land conversion affect residents' participation in local governance, community relations and conflict. By integrating analyses of institutional heterogeneity and local social change, the research will advance understanding of domestic Chinese political processes.
