Craton modification and growth: the east Albany-Fraser Orogen in 3-D

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The east Albany-Fraser Orogen in Western Australia represents a modified cratonic margin, with considerable potential for mineral resources. The 3-D structure of the lithosphere in the orogen and the adjacent Yilgarn Craton will be imaged using deployments of passive seismic recorders exploiting distant earthquakes and ambient seismic noise, in conjunction with 600 km of recently acquired deep crustal seismic reflection data. The full suite of available geophysical, geochemical and geological information will be brought together to understand the way in which cratons act as nuclei for continental growth, the nature of the orogen in depth, and the modifications made to the craton margin.
