Demographic Consequences of Asian Disasters: Family Dynamics, Social Capital and Migration Patterns

By applying demographic analysis to disaster theory we plan to map the long-term population patterns which emerge from large scale Asian disasters. Around a conceptual framework of disruption, deaths and diseases, and demographic futures, we investigate and analyse data on family dynamics, social capital and migration patterns to find out how populations impacted by disasters respond and what the long-term impact on them is. This research will contribute to more effective governmental policies on disaster mitigation, preparedness and recovery for vulnerable populations. The innovative focus brings together disaster theory and demography.
