    Project Details

    Description

Richard Gardiner 'Dick' Casey, Maie Casey and Patricia 'Pat' Jarrett lived together in the Australian Legation Residence in Washington during 1940-1: Dick as Australian Minister, Maie as his diplomatically intensely engaged wife, and Pat as their press aide, Maie's intimate friend and independent media identity in her own right. Quietly encouraged by the Roosevelt Administration, they conducted a sustained campaign of private and public diplomacy to project an identity for Australia distinct from the then unpopular Britain with which it was usually conflated. This project maps that campaign and the interpersonal diplomacy underpinning it, incorporating emotion, gender and sexuality perspectives not dealt with in the historiography.
