Project Details

Description

This project will extend the largest transportable seismic array experiment in the southern hemisphere northwards into Queensland to image the crust and upper mantle beneath the Great Artesian Basin using multi-scale seismic tomography. Novel developments in seismic imaging will enable structures from sedimentary basin to lithospheric scale to be resolved using energy from only distant earthquakes and ambient seismic noise. As well as propelling passive seismic imaging into a new domain of application, the project will answer fundamental questions about the tectonic evolution of eastern Australia, and provide fresh insight into a region with rich exploration potential for hydrocarbons, geothermal energy, carbon capture and ore deposits.
