    Description

    Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the most powerful analytical tool in chemistry, ranging from small molecules to 3D structure determinations of large biomolecules such as proteins and DNA. This application is for a probe that offers the highest possible sensitivity of detection, about 2.5 times higher than the current probe, which is a loaned item and partly defect. The new probe is essential to regain full operation of the 800 MHz NMR spectrometer at the Australian National University, which constitutes a $4M investment. By accelerating measurements 6-fold and being much less sensitive to salt, a greater range of protein systems can be studied, including important drug targets such as the CoV-2 main protease.
