Enhancing the science reach of second generation interferometric gravitational wave detectors through innovative mirror design and control

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Gravitational waves are ripples in the very fabric of space-time produced by the motion of massive celestial bodies. These waves carry unique information about the Universe and have the potential to revolutionise our understanding of spinning neutron stars, black hole collisions, supernovae and even the formation of the universe itself. The quest to detect gravitational waves is entering a new era with the multi-national Advanced LIGO project. This research will develop Australian technologies to enhance the sensitivity of Advanced LIGO and allow it to quickly target specific gravitational wave sources.
